How are you feeling today? Chances are, since the time you woke up and got out of bed, you’ve experienced a variety of different emotions as you navigated the events of your day. Personally, I went from being relieved to be home after a business trip to frustrated by my son’s behavior in about five minutes. After that, I was overwhelmed by the amount of work I have to do before we leave for vacation and excited about a project I created. Kids are just like us grown-ups; they experience a huge variety of emotions all day long which can be tricky for them to deal with since they don’t have the same level of self-awareness we do. One of the most important skills we can teach our children is to recognize and identify how they’re feeling so that they can deal with their emotions in healthy ways.

One way we like to talk about our feelings in our house is with the help of some fun DIY emoticon magnets! They’re really simple to create, and even easier to use. Here’s how we created ours.

Materials:
- bottle caps
- printed emoticons
- Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
- glue
- scissors
- magnets

Step 1: Print out the emoticons and cut them out, making sure they fit inside your bottle caps.

Step 2: Place a small amount of glue inside each bottle cap, then attach an emoticon on top.

Step 3: Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic on top of each emoticon. Do not fill the entire bottlecap with it, or it will become cloudy. Apply just enough to barely cover the entire surface.

Step 4: When the Dimensional Magic is completely dry {in about 24 hours}, glue a magnet to the back of each bottle cap.

That’s all there is to it! Your magnets are ready to use! Once they’re on the fridge, you can use them to talk about the different ways you’re feeling and encourage your kids to do the same. You can even dedicate a special space on the fridge where each member of the family can place a magnet that represents how they’re feeling every day.

Emoticons are becoming a language of their own and are a great way to visually show how something makes you feel. Tampico is hosting a fun game this summer called emojiball where you can win awesome prizes by using emoticons! All you have to do is go to their Facebook page, Twitter, or Instagram, and post the 5 emojis of your choice from a selection of twenty-four. Use the hashtag #tampicoemojiball to enter and each week new winners will be chosen! You can enter once per platform each week. Good luck!
